Greetings again from the darkness. HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER"S APOCALYPSE was released in 1991. It was an incredible documentary that explored the struggles of Frances Ford Coppola in making his classic film APOCALYPSE NOW (1979. Although it"s totally unrelated to either of those films, this latest from director Milcho Manchevski kept reminding me that we rarely get a peek at just how challenging it is to complete a film, and HEARTS OF DARKNESS is likely the cream of the behind-the-scenes crop.
Director Manchevski directed the Oscar nominated BEFORE THE RAIN (1995) and he, along with co-writer W.P. Rosenthal, deliver an indie-film societal commentary with some not so complimentary observations on certain segments of our populace. Producer Kate (Sarah Goldberg) and director Trevor (Will Janowitz) are in a relationship and are trying desperately to make their name with a documentary that can play film festivals. While filming in a homeless shelter, they stumble upon a woman who calls herself Bikini. a homeless African-American Army veteran who is desperate to get her daughter out of the social services system. Bikini (Condola Rashad) is a striking, volatile woman with a story - the perfect subject for Trevor and Kate"s documentary.
It takes a while for us viewers to get the rhythm of the film. We are watching as a documentary crew attempts to make a film about a woman who may be delusional or bipolar, and at a minimum is a bit unstable. Bikini admits to a nervous breakdown while in Iraq, and is inconsistent remembering to take her medication. However, in her moments of clarity, we recognize her exceptional intelligence and charisma. At other times, we worry about the safety of her and those around her. We even question whether she actually has a daughter and how much of her story we can believe.
While coming to grips with the presentation and what to make of Bikini, we also have to adjust to Trevor, an obnoxious jerk who only cares about making his film - and is willing to exploit Bikini (or anyone else) to get it done. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Kate, who has a heart of gold, even at the expense of reality at times. she"s the stereotypical modern day liberal extremist who wants to save everyone and everything. It"s the only way she knows to rid herself of white guilt syndrome.
Cinematographer Joshua Z Weinstein (director of MENASHE) works wonders with the tight residential quarters as well as the numerous urban settings from the streets of New York. Ms. Rashad, whom many will recognize from "Billions" delivers a powerhouse performance as Bikini, though it"s a bit of stretch to see someone with movie star looks pulling off the role of someone living on the streets. Cynicism is present throughout, and director Manchevski really wants us to question what is "truth. what happens when the media crosses the line and influences the story. what is the real story.

Presently he is writing (on laptop ) the biography of his only daughter Anuradha who happens to be a successful classical dancer. He is waiting patiently for things to happen in his daughter"s life so that he can complete his book. Anuradha ( Indrani Dutta ) is awarded for her life- long dedication to dance. She is immediately invited by her fathers"s brother and his wife ( Shakuntala Barua) who live in Visakhapatnam. Anupam"s father does not approve of his becoming a writer. He wanted him to be an engineer but Anupam pursued his dream and always encouraged Anuradha to pursue her dream too. He seldom interfered in her affairs. Anuradha decides to go to Visakhapatnam. Outside the airport Anuradha"s luggage gets exchanged with the identical luggage of Rob Dutt ( Debdut Ghosh) who is returning from Paris after completion of his advanced studies as a hauteur-courtier. he, like his father wants to get into the world of fashion designing. Auradha"s uncle ( B D Mukherjee) takes her to the Gurukul where he wants her to conduct a workshop with the children and perform a dance show for the benefit of the children. The Gurukul has been established by a world famous young painter, Rishav Sen ( Kausik Sen ). Rishav is a kind of stylish guy who always moves with his dog and a bodyguard. he rides expensive cars and always wears designers" suits and tinted glasses. Rob comes down to Gurukul to return Anuradha"s luggage where he witnesses her dance steps and gets deeply impressed. Anuradha finds Rob a warm and passionate person in comparison to Rishav who seems to be somewhat a withdrawn kind of person. Rob invites them to his first fashion show in India. While the other models are walking over the ramp, the show stopper model, Pamela ( Pamela Bhutoria) appears to be heavily drunk. Rob cancels her contract and immediately replaces her with Anuradha. she saves the show, but an enmity is born in the heart of the rejected model Pamela. She vows to take revenge on both Anuradha and Rob. A passionate Rob builds up a team with Anuradha and while training for the upcoming Fashion show sponsored by a company, they fall in love. But the show proves out to be a disaster as Anuradha, the show stopper for this show is abducted and fails to turn up for the show. Finally she appears the hall in a pathetic shape. Rob refuses to listen to her and abuses her bitterly. Anuradha comes out in a shocked shape. Anuradha remains in a shocked shape while Anupam, her father arrive Visakhapatnam. Finally, a long lasting misunderstanding with his father is resolved. But Anuradha remains speechless. Her uncle contacts Rob"s father ( Gautam Mukherjee) who previously agreed upon a formal engagement of Rob and Anuradha on a certain date. Rob"s father declines to carry on with the commitment any more but suddenly Anuradha comes back to reality with a tremendous force. She declares she is going to marry on that very date. She approaches Rishav and asks if it is possible for him to marry her. After what appears to be an initial shock Rishav asks if she knew everything about him. She says, yes. I know everything about you. Others ask her the same question and she replies in affirmative. On the night of the marriage Anuradha finds out truth. She runs out of the room and declares Rishav to be an imposter who has lied to her. She refuses to listen to anybody. In the mean time , another improvement takes place. Pamela appears soberly in Rob"s designing apartment to say she has quit alcohol and wants a come- back. Rob refuses. She admits it was she who had arranged for Auradha"s abduction on the evening of the show. A repentant Rob faces Anuradha and implores their relationship to continue as before, but Anuradha is not sure. Anupam, her father finally leads Anuradha towards the truth without imposing anything. He explain there have been many a painter in history who painted masterpieces in spite of being challenged . Anuradha is confused. She goes to Rishav"s studio with Rob, equipped with the divorce papers. To their utter surprises they find Rishav has already painted a number of Anurradha"s portraits. And he is passionately painting another. he feels Anuradha"s presence and asks for the divorce papers. He is ready to sign without contest. A flabbergasted Anuradha asks how was it possible. Rishav explains with a plaintive smile that it is the feel that matters. He had felt her feelings and felt the texture of her face on the wedding night. that was enough for him. Rob realizes Rishav is the perfect person for Anuradha and gestures silently to accept Rishav. Picking up the divorce papers and tearing it in pieces he leaves silently in pain. In a trance of dismay Anuradha begins to weep uncontrollably and touches Rishav. She says she wants to feel him too. Anupam closes the published book titled " Sedin Basante".
